One of the main aims of the Canadian Immigration System is to bring families closer and together. The government does this in the form of the Family sponsorship category that welcomes more than 80,000 immigrants each year solely through this category.

When an individual is agreeing to be a sponsor, he/she must sign an undertaking promising to give financial support for the basic needs of their spouse or partner and their dependent children. Some of the basic needs are as follows:

• • Food, clothing, shelter, and other needs for everyday living,
  • Dental care, eye care, and other health needs that aren’t covered by public health services.

To be an eligible sponsor, one must meet the following criteria:

• • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or are registered as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act. Permanent residents looking to sponsor must reside in Canada at the time of submitting their sponsorship application.
  • Must demonstrate you are not receiving social assistance unless you have a disability.
